Yoga Styles Taught Here

Basic (Hatha) Yoga

This is a basic Yoga class that includes breath work and a series of asanas (postures) suitable for almost anyone. Yoga means “joining” and the emphasis of hatha Yoga is on the joining of body and mind in a focused practice that focuses inward, using the breath as a guide. We will build core and upper-body strength (slowly) as well as flexibility. We use props and adaptations to make this practice accessible to almost anyone. I do not teach inversions beyond a simple “legs up the wall.” Although this is not specifically an introductory class, each lesson includes reasonably detailed instructions for moving into and out of the postures. My teaching of Hatha Yoga is significantly influenced by my training in Ashaya Yoga – “Yoga from the Heart”  – but it is not a pure Ashaya Yoga practice.

Gentle Yoga

This class is a variation on Hatha Yoga, eliminating some of the more challenging asanas. It is particularly suitable for those over 50 with limited upper body strength. Most of the practice takes place in standing postures (asanas) or on the mat, largely skipping “downward facing dog,” plank and other postures that require significant strength. Like Hatha Yoga, this class includes breath work and the joining of body and mind – it is simply less vigorous than the standard Hatha Yoga class.

Chair and Standing Yoga for Older Adults and those with Mobility Challenges
can be offered by request

If you are interested in Yoga but think you cannot get down on the mat -- or are afraid that you might not get back up -- this could be for you.  I can do an entire class with people sitting in chairs, but I can also offer a class that mixed seated postures with some standing -- supported by the chair or a wall.  I attended a four-day intensive workshop in February 2018 to prepare me to offer these classes.  See certificate here.
